New Leadtail Study Looks at the Social Habits of Digital Marketers

I’ve covered a couple of other Leadtail reports because they divulge some interesting facts about the social media habits of various executives. These are typically the people you are trying to reach in your own digital marketing strategies, so understanding where they spend their time, especially in social media is very good to know. This latest report was completed in association with PunchTab: Social Media Insights: How Digital Marketers Engage on Twitter.
That’s right, even digital marketers engage on social networks for their own personal use. Here’s what they share:
This report is based on a survey of 515 North America digital marketers who were active on Twitter between Feb 1, 2014 and April 30th. These digital marketers sent out a 122, 027 tweets and shared over 57k links.
Aside from their wide use of Twitter for sharing content, they also use YouTube (56%), Instagram (48%), Facebook (28%) and LinkedIn (23%), among a whole list of others you can see when you read the report yourself. Do you find it interesting that videos and image social networks are in that top 5?
Another key point that Leadtail makes is that nine of the top 15 social media apps/platforms are primarily or only mobile.
So what do they like to talk about? Primarily they share content they find on mainstream media sites such as the New York Times, Forbes and HuffPo. These sites cover broad business and technology issues and trends. After that, industry media comes with sites like Mashable, AdAge, TechCrunch and the Business Insider being the most popular. The report notes that industry sites tend to carry content created by marketing thought leaders, and take advantage of social media to really push their content, so it makes sense digital marketers would follow and share this content.
In terms of the social sources shared, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn top the list. And favorite topics?
We’ve looked at favorite media sites, but what about favorite people? takes first place, with some well known twitters right behind (, , , and more).
I’ve said it before, these Leadtail reports provide you with some good information. If you are in B2B, selling to digital marketers, this data gives you a good place to start looking at different ways to reach them over social media, and publishing media, whether that’s through advertising or by publishing your own thought leadership content.
Don’t forget the full report is available for download.
