I recently had the opportunity to write an eBook sponsored by Percussion Software. As companies strive to deliver highly personalized contextual customer experiences they are looking at their current web content management platform and realizing it may not have the chops to do what they require. That means a new WCM selection process – something that is challenging in the best situations.
There are some key steps you need to take to ensure select the best content management system for you and I outline some of these in the eBook, but that’s the not the focus. I have seen many situations where a company looks to their design firm to select the best web content management system for their needs. After all, they have an established relationship with their design firm and it’s likely that design firm has some experience working on CMS projects.
But the reality is, your design firm can’t be the driver of your selection process and there are some obvious reasons why which I present in the eBook. These include the lack of understanding of your internal processes for creating and managing content, and the need to focus on the entire web experience, not just how good your website is going to look. This doesn’t mean your design firm doesn’t have a role to play – they have an important role, it’s just suited to their core skills.
I welcome you to read the eBook and then come back and let me know what you think. Do you have similar experiences covered by the points in the book? Or do you completely disagree? Keep in mind I distinguish very clearly between a “design firm” and a “systems integration firm” – there’s a big difference and it’s related to the technology and business process knowledge.
