Leadtail Examines the Social Activity of Search Marketers

It has looked at the social habits of digital marketers, of CFOs, of mid-size marketers, now Leadtail, a social media strategy and social insights company, examines the .
Search engine marketing (SEM) is one of the core tools in the digital marketers tool belt. Thanks to Google, and the increasing importance of social media marketing, it’s an area that is constantly changing. Leadtail set out to find how these marketers describe themselves, what topics they discuss most on social media and what content sources they prefer (both people and publishers).
Why is this important to know? Well if you plan to market products and/or services to these people, their activity on social media should offer some good ideas. It’s also a great way to find a search marketer if you are in the market for one. Or for a current search marketer to find great resources to grow their own knowledge/experience.
The Search Marketer Twitter Study
Leadtail conducted its research from May 1 – 31, 2014. It included 521 individual North American search marketers active on Twitter. The study included over 105,000 tweets, and 55,000 share links.
A quick summary of the findings:
- Some of the most tweeted topics for search marketers are digital marketing, search marketing (such as PPC and SEO), plus analytics (everyone likes to talk about analytics don’t they?).
- Industry media is a favorite place to find information – media sites like Search Engine Land, Search Engine Watch, Marketing Land and Mashable. The research shows that 55% of the shared content is industry media-based.
- 29% of shared content is from mainstream media such as Forbes, NYT and the Wall Street Journal. I think it’s good to point out here a number of smaller media sites (both mainstream and industry-based) that you can also leverage to reach search marketers that might be more in your budget than the bigger sites (think long tail).
- Of the 15 possible social sources shared, YouTube was number one, followed by Slideshare, Instagram and LinkedIn.
- There are a lot of people out there talking about search marketing. Favorites for this study include from Google (obviously), , and .
